Make Life Easier With Sharing Widgets

Written by Groucho on November 30, 2010 under News, Software

Technology has always been known to make life easier and widgets are easily the main solution to most of these things. Sharing files is something that can be done online but thanks to the efforts of Tingz, people can not only rely on using online access but can now use widgets as far as TV and phones as well.

Widgets make it easier to network and connect with friends and associates in real time. Rather than solely rely on using manual means or supposed alternative ways to transfer information and events from one destination to another, these wide array of networks to which Tingz serves is sure to be a welcome state.

Being able to operate in multiple platforms is another added plus. For sure, the Tingz developers have seen this and studied the possibilities. That is one reason why it is a good software to check out today.

Tingz works on Mac OS X, the iPhone, and in Windows Media Center. In each, the interface is basically the same, which Tingz believes is the most useful feature it offers. And what it offers is quite substantial: it lets you find movie listings, watch trailers, pick showtimes, and purchase tickets, acquire recipes, and help find you restaurants in your area.

You can share your “Tingz” with friends that may want to see what sort of recipes you’re looking at or where you’re going for dinner.

Standing on Your Feet as a Freelance Flash Designer

Written by dave on November 25, 2010 under News

Often, when it comes to freelancing, one of the most difficult parts of the whole ordeal is actually getting up the ladder and establishing a name for yourself. In the beginning, while you’re Mr. Nobody, it can be very difficult to find any jobs at all – never mind well-paying ones – and this is the point where most newbies turn back and walk away.

To avoid this, you need to get into the whole thing well-prepared and know what to expect. With any job that involves freelance flash design, people are going to want to look at your previous work to judge you – so make sure you’ve got something to show them! It doesn’t matter if all you’ve got are small designs you did in your free time that never got anywhere – many of your potential clients would understand you’re just starting out and have no commercial work to show yet; however, do yourself a favor and polish those old designs a bit, clean them up where they need it so that they make the best possible impression. Branding with Widgets

Written by Groucho on November 18, 2010 under News

If there is something most of us have not noticed is that widgets offer a form of branding in a sense. We all view widgets as another mode of channeling and marketing but identifying widgets by finding out where they originate is technically a branding practice if you look at it up and close.

Widgets have their own designs and interface. Technically these are another aspect of widget technology. Looks and how they can be used differ and for each person that will pretty much be important. Updates may be presented in a different manner and depending on how they are configured (if they do allow user interface), widgets can be a great solution to resolve a lot of personal preferences many of us have today.

We have seen Yahoo and some news sites offer widgets that can be placed on your desktops. Some even have website interface. Overall, they cater to exposure as well although the work behind the belief that they were made to make life easier for us. For the analytic people these days, you know that there is something more than just serving and making it easier for the people today. Branching out through widgets is a given and people who use them can help measure how many people today actually use these widgets.

For what it is worth, it is a great brainchild as far as marketing and using technology today. Branding is hard to establish but with widgets these days, a lot of identity is being poured out especially if you talk about the number of people who love to use widgets.

How Many Widgets Do you Need for your Blog?

Written by Groucho on October 29, 2010 under News

Wordpress Widgets

Other than occupying more space, uploading and using a lot of widgets may become a liability rather than a boost for most bloggers who maintain a blog using WordPress. Though you can easily leave them inactive, as far as organization purposes is concerned, it may cause complication as far as what widget plug-ins you may want to use.

There are a lot of them for sure. Tags, search meters, and other needed scripts such as counters and RSS feeds are the normal ones an average blogger would want. There are other enhancements such as affiliate widgets which need to be installed for your blog to be counted. While some are gearing towards optimization, others are looking at design. But between the two, design does not really need a lot of widgets in them. You just have to pick out the ones that are really important.

There will be instances when people get too awed by the introduction of new widgets compatible in WordPress. Out of curiosity, they want to test them out at first. But once they find that these are just adding load to their blog, they deactivate and then delete them in the end.

For widgets preference, it is a matter of categorizing their relevance and importance. If they don’t have any impact on the blog, avoid installing them. Some widgets are plainly programmed for design purposes and may not be ideal for you blog. Think right to know which widgets are indeed suitable to your blog’s needs.

Chatterous Widget

Written by Groucho on October 15, 2010 under News, Widgets

Have you ever heard of Chatterous? I would not be surprised if you had not heard of them until now. It is actually a start up company, which has the main idea of offering venues to chat using whatever platform you prefer.

Let’s say you have a blog or a web site. The idea is that by embedding Chatterous onto your site, you will be able to chat with other users. Venture Beat gives more details on how Chatterous works:

The chat widget does exactly what you’d expect — it’s a way to embed a Chatterous chat on your website or blog. Of course, there are many, many other chat widgets out there, but Chatterous brings its own spin on the concept. Rather than simply integrating all your communication tools, Chatterous lets you choose one method — such as email, instant messaging, or SMS text messaging — then you can participate in a chat with people using other methods. So you’ve got multiple channels leading into one conversation. The chat widget is just another aspect of that strategy, adding another way users can watch and participate in the conversation. If you add the chat widget to, say, your blog, visitors can read and participate in the conversation on-site — but people don’t have to visit your site; in fact most of the chat participants can be still be emailing, IMing, etc.

I actually like that idea – being able to participate in a chat using various platforms, such as e-mail. While it is not that hard to gain access to chat these days, there are still some circumstances that might prove to be challenging (like when you’re at work and all you can access is e-mail).

CoffeeSpot : A Coffeeholic’s WP Theme

Written by Groucho on September 17, 2010 under News

Themes are great to show an aspect of your personality. For coffeeholics out there, you can use the widget-ready Coffeespot theme from the WP themepark to show your love for the aromatic brew. I love how each section in the sidebar is headed by a brown title bar, great for keeping track of where you are.

Default appearance:
Color: Predominantly white and gray with accents in shades of brown
Images: A header of coffee beans and a collection of several coffee mugs that can be used to mark the post titles. The unordered list bullet is actually a miniature coffeemug!
Appearance: There is a very faint gray line separating the post title with the entry information. A similar gray line lies beneath the comments links, segregating the posts from each other.
Sidebar: Separate sections for a small blurb, tags, archives, links, and feeds. It has a meta section at the bottom of the sidebar for easy logins and registration. There searchbar is also located in the sidebar.
The zip comes with template pages for : archives, contact, author, and a favorites/links page.

You can download it at wp themepark.
Link to the theme “Coffeespot”

I like this theme for its simplicity and the colors. It makes me think of lazy afternoons spent with a good book and a cuppa, and it’s pretty easy to tweak. If coffee isn’t your thing, create your own images and modify the css that comes with it. Links in posts are rusty brown with a light tan background when you hover above it. Those in the sidebar are tan, while any links to other pages on the top navigation bar are in white. The current page is underlined in white. Any subpages you make for any given page will be linked in the sidebar. Sadish Bala, author of Coffeespot, has six more themes in the WP Themepark.

Musil – a nice widget-ready theme

Written by Groucho on August 30, 2010 under News

Click the image for a better view.

Are you using WordPress as a CMS and a blogging app? If you are and you are wondering how to make sure that the readers of your blog would feel that each of your posts and articles would have specific ‘weights’ in terms of special articles, regular ones and asides, you could actually set it up using Musil as your theme. The good thing about it is that it’s a really simple looking theme that would not make you feel too overwhelmed.

Positive points for Musil:

  • Distinguish the different kinds of entries that you have.
Maybe you have things you consider as ‘special features’—how should these appear on your site? Having them appear differently from the rest would be good so that people would have that clue that they are there as special features.

  • Asides are really seen as asides.
If you’re someone who wants to put sidenotes, no need to worry about how to fiddle around much. Seems like sidenotes work without a hitch here.

  • Widget support
Whether you are a newbie in blogging or a pro, you could customize your blog further through the use of widgets. There are some widgets that are automatically included in this theme and you just need to activate them. The widgets are: Related Posts and Scrobbler. Check out the plugins so you could activate them, as needed.

People are getting more and more conscious about how readers would benefit more from the layout of their individual blogs. Musil is definitely one of the themes that think about such factors as well as the usability of it from the user’s perspective. Maybe if you are someone who simply needs to know what would work out of the box and have a nice theme to look at at the same time, this is an option you could choose. If you’re running a news and features blog, you might also want to check this out or even modify it.

GTalk File Transfer Widget

Written by Groucho on April 10, 2010 under News, Software, Widgets

GTalk, Google’s own instant messenger, has been around for a few years now, and more and more people are using it. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that businesses are using Google Apps more, so it follows that Gtalk becomes the instant messenger of choice.

We all have to admit, however, that Gtalk does have its downsides. For those of us who have been using another instant messaging client for years (Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger), the adjustment may not be welcome. Believe you me, though, the adjustment period does not take that long. And, with the improvements that Google is making, everything just becomes much more convenient.

Take for instance the new widget that allows file transfer in the web version. This file transfer feature has been available in the independent Gtalk client for quite some time now, but those who do not have the client installed know how frustrating it can be to have to attach a file to an e-mail rather than instantaneously transfer through the chat window.

Well, your frustrations are over. Late in March, Google added the functionality to the web version as well as Orkut. This means that you can use any computer, log on to your Google account, and transfer files using the chat window without having to create a new message.

Oh, I have to be clearer I think – this functionality is available through iGoogle chat and NOT the Gmail account. In the near future, though, this should also be available via your Inbox chat as well.

Yahoo And Twitter Join Forces

Written by Groucho on February 28, 2010 under News, Twitter

Two of the most recognizable names on the Internet today have joined forces, causing quite a stir, especially in the world of social media. Both names – Yahoo and Twitter – have been around for quite some time and have gathered their own set of ardent followers. Due to the merger, more possibilities are arising, creating a lot of excitement.

What’s the best thing about this move? You may already know that Twitter users can access their tweets AND update their tweets through Yahoo’s plethora of products. In effect, we can say that Yahoo has made itself a Twitter client. Obviously, this allows for more flexibility and accessibility on the part of the user – which is always a good thing.

On the widgets end, I will not be surprised to see widgets at the center of this flexibility and accessibility campaign. Perhaps in a few months – maybe less – we will be hearing of Yahoo-Twitter widgets that will make tweeting an even easier and more fun activity.

There aren’t a lot of specific details as of now, but it seems that both parties are very excited about the merger. According to Bryan Lamkin, the senior vice president of Yahoo’s consumer products group, they’re “turning the key to the online social universe — you will find the most personally relevant experiences through Yahoo! We’re also simplifying people’s lives by bringing their social worlds — and the world —- together for easy access.”

Twitter is just as happy with this statement: “The information in one single tweet can travel light-years farther with this Yahoo! integration. Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most.”

I suppose it’s a win-win for them, but my question is: will we (the users) also come out as winners? I hope so!

Widgets: The Focus At CES

Written by Groucho on January 17, 2010 under News, Widgets

tmpD6This year’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is over and done with, but the air (at least the Internet “air”) is still buzzing with what was shown in the event. Year in and year out, technophiles look forward to this event as it showcases some of the best in “toys” – both existing and those that are yet to come.

The recently concluded CES is no different in that there were gadgets everywhere, but it seems that there is one hot topic in the realm of software: widgets for TVs. As an aside: I can’t believe how advanced TV sets are these days. I still remember that big old television set that my grandma used to have. It was encased in a wooden frame that took up almost the whole wall in the living room. Now, we have (almost) paper thin TVs that can do practically anything!

Anyway, with this new generation of television sets, other companies are taking advantage of their features – the ability to use widgets one of them. The idea is for the TV to be connected to the web so that anytime you want to check something out without having to use another device (such as your computer or your phone), you can simply call up a widget and you will get the information you need.

Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, eBay, Yahoo – these are merely a handful of the most recognizable names online today, and they are all offering widgets for various TVs. For now, there are probably around 50 widgets that one can choose from. Manufacturers say, however, that by the end of this year, we can expect that figure to double.
