A lot of blogs use two-column or three-column themes and yet here’s one interesting single-column theme. Daydream. It is a really simple-looking theme actually. It is sleek and simple, using blue and gray as main colors. This single-column blog theme is also widget-ready so it’s something you ought to check out.

Some notes about the theme:
Colors: blues, grays
Asides: Well, they wouldn’t be your typical asides. They’re going to appear as mini-posts on your single-column theme. They’re not going to be found at the nav bar below the main content part. They’ll be posted like regular posts but they would have a different style compared to your regular posts. They would have smaller fonts.
Search bar: It is at the bottom of the theme.
Nav bar: It is at the bottom of the screen.

This theme is pretty clean-looking but it is probably not for every blogger out there. For one thing, some bloggers don’t like the search bar below the rest of the layout. Aside from that, it might appear a bit overwhelming to have such long pages if you have several entries on the front page.

Recommendations:
This theme might be suitable for you if you’d like to post only one thing at a time. Especially really long entries. It might be ideal if you are sharing one recipe at a time, if you are a chef. Or you could even have an aside and an entry containing your recipe.

Download link: Get it here.
See it on: its very own Daydream theme homepage.

Random Text Widget Using Javascript

Written by Groucho on December 3, 2006 under Software

random textYou could never have too much fun with random text on your blog. Sometimes you get such funky text messages that you would like to share with others. Sometimes you are tickled pink by the literary lines that you read. If you don’t quite feel confident about creating your own widget or editing a WordPress widget, you could always use the Javascript for random texts that could be found on its own page.

It’s really simple, if you think about it. What you do is basically copy and paste the Javascript from that page. Then you could edit the quotes in the quotation marks. You could probably call it your Random Quote widget or Textamizer if you so wish;) If you don’t quite like the random sentences there, you could get inspired by these other sites:

Shakespearean insults – for the literary you! May your blog’s visitors find it amusing…
Geeky quotes – if you really like it all geeky and definitely interesting, this is a site to see.
Firefly quotes – if you are a fan of the TV series Firefly, you could check out this site for a lot of interesting quotes!
Top 25 technology quotes – Yes, more geekery! Need you ask for more?

If you get any quotes from these sites, make sure that you cite them and acknowledge them properly. Better yet, look at the terms of the sites that you will use as a source of your random quotes. You wouldn’t want to mess with people, right? Blog responsibly! That’s the way to blog.

Widget-Ready Themes

The Indigo theme by Kaushal Sheth was featured here and it looks like there is another blog theme worthy of mention. The Online Business theme. It is also a widgets-ready theme.

Credits:
Kaushal Sheth mentions this on the Online Business theme page:

The author theme is DRD, the one who also made Fluidity.

This is basically a port of the Online Business theme so maybe you could also credit DRD in case you would make further modifications on this layout.

Notes about the theme:
Navigation bar at the top.
It’s really neat that you already have a navigation bar which would contain links to the following pages: About, Products, Download, Our Partners and Contact Us. For businesses and professionals offering particular services, you could easily modify the values of those links to the pages that contain the said information.
Header image.
It is pretty much a generic business blogging template but you could easily change the header image from the looks of it, with a few tweaks in the style.css file in case you will be using a different sized image.
Simple and clean look.
As with the themes created and ported by Kaushal Sheth, this also has a simple and clean look. It is primarily white, dark gray and a certain shade of blue.
Search box seems to need to be put on a higher part of the sidebar.
It is currently one of the lower elements of the sidebar. To give easy access to it, try modifying it so that it will be up there.

Who knows? It might do wonders in setting the mood on your blog. It might attract some attention to it or encourage your readers to keep coming back and read some more.
